“No, Mirna, you’re leaving the side of your face exposed doing that. Lift your fist!” Aaron’s shouted instruction filled the sparring room.

Aaron, Rob, Mirna, Dietrich, and I were having the late evening sparring session that Mirna had volun-told us to earlier that day. Dietrich claimed he wanted to observe our strengths and weaknesses to pair us with his other agents on upcoming operations, but I doubted it had much to do with that. Rob and Aaron specifically had been spending a lot of time sparring with various people already and apparently found suitable opponents. Aaron had reported both Tony and Tina were of a similar skill level as him. Much to my surprise, he also told me that Kathleen had done several bouts with Rob and came out the victor for over half of them.

Which, counting the number of visible bruises on Rob, made me think they had held nothing back. They had clearly determined who was the better martial artist. I was just hopeful that Kathleen hadn’t been vicious. Most of Lifeline, unsurprisingly, was still cold and distrustful of us, so it wasn’t difficult to imagine some of Rob’s bruises were a result of that.

Considering that, I suspected tonight’s activity was more to help us trust Dietrich and Mirna. Supposedly Dietrich was going to outline a plan tomorrow for our next step against Garrett based on the debrief we had a few days ago. I think the director wanted some rapport built with us before we were going out into what would undoubtedly be dangerous situations with them.

What started out as a friendly bout of sparring had since turned into lessons. Grace had left nearly half an hour ago. She claimed that she wanted to do more reading. Presumably it was about Agent Corsa, but I didn’t ask. She wasn’t taking the information well, that someone had directly given their life in a way that led to our freedom. Learning more about the woman, I assumed, was a way that she would find peace with what happened—that remembering who Agent Corsa was somehow was a way to thank her for the sacrifice she made.

I was currently in the sparring ring for a sixth round.

“Up, Mirna!”

Mirna and I were facing off again, Aaron giving her suggestions to improve in small ways. I had beaten her only two of our five rounds, and it wasn’t easy. She was quick and dogged, earning her the three victories. My two victories were because of one specific combo—the one that Aaron was now instructing Mirna how to defend against.

“There, good. Be ready to step back when she strikes at you.” I waited a beat before I threw a hook.

She was ready. Stepping back, she aimed a round kick at my head. I dropped to the floor and swept my foot at her knees, narrowly missing as she jumped my leg. Using my momentum, I sprung up, blocked a jab, and sidestepped a cross. Darting to her side, I launched a combo that had been successful in beating her in our previous matches.
